Default Harley FXR

Curious why the Harley FXR was not so popular when new but became a cult bike years later?

I heard the FXRT, FXRP and FXRD were considered too Japanses looking when new. Now people are fighting over them. What's the deal?

My theory, for what it's worth:
By the time the FXR came out, the people HD had courted as new customers (yuppies?!) were the sort who were choosing their ride far more on looks than capability. So they didn't much like the way the FXR looked and were oblivious to its great dynamic performance. So they didn't buy.
Used buyers, on the other hand, are often less "well-heeled" guys, who don't just want a bike as an occassional toy, but are actually going to use it for a lot of everyday riding. They might not be too keen on the looks of the FXR (though they can be tidied up quite nicely), but are very interested in the fact that it's comfortable to ride, puts its power down well and handles better than any BT before or since.
Combine that current used buyer interest with the low-ish original sales figures and you get people scrabbling to buy the few that are available.

Scarface was a Hollywood bust in theaters but became a cult classic and now has turned millions in profit. Our country is weird like that, as much of a society we are of right now there is always going to be that historical value added to things, right or wrong, that's the way it is. I am a fan of older bikes, older awesome bikes, but older non-the-less. I am a huge fan of history and that is why I am recording routes from riders all over the world, so when I am older and have the money to do this I can try all of these routes. So, if you have a special route please post it on my online map at allstate insurance route or allstate insurance moto. I am an affiliate of allstate and thus I am using there online map to do this. Thanks

David
